Streams we offer

We offer a number of streams of support, and signpost to other organisations in the city too.

Crisis

Supporting those in emergency situations through crisis food provision and other immediate help

  • Foodbank – we have a foodbank that can provide parcels on a Wednesday afternoon. To access the foodbank a household needs to be referred, the referral must be made by someone from an agency or organisation who has recognised the household is in crisis, for example, a support worker, social worker, teacher, faith leader, GP surgery etc. Please ask them to contact us at loveyourneighbour@gasstreet.church and we will set up a referral for you. Each referral means you will get three food parcels, one a week.

  • The Community Shop – we have pantry-style food provision, where clients pay £4.50 and can take away a food shop of at least 10 items, including fresh food, and with their ticket they can get a free tea or coffee at Colmore Coffee whilst they wait. The shop has fresh fruit and veg, fresh meat and fresh dairy, as well as frozen and cupboard essentials.

To be a member of The Community Shop you must live within 1.6km of our building, and be in receipt of means-tested benefits including child tax credits and working tax credits. We will ask to see proof of this.

FAQs

  • At Love Your Neighbour Birmingham we do not discriminate based on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. All who need help are welcome.

There are some streams of help where there are appropriate requirements to access them, for example the Ladies Salsa class is only for women, membership for The Community Shop is tied to location and receipt of means-tested benefits, Stay and Play is only for those accompanying children, etc.

Most of our streams of supports are only available for people living with the B1, B5 and B15 postcodes.

  • None of our team are trained in benefits or housing advice, however we do know other organisations and people who are. We recommend Karis Neighbour Scheme and their Community Advice.

During The Community Shop, we often have outside charities or groups come and provide drop-in support, such as the Community Support Worker from Birmingham City Council, housing support from Trident or Citizen, NHS Health and Wellbeing advice etc. If you’d like to know who will be in next Thursday, just contact us at loveyourneighbour@gasstreet.church or call us on 0121 820 5618.

  • We are a warm space registered both with Warm Welcome and Birmingham City Council. Colmore Coffee is open 9am – 4pm Monday – Thursday, and 12pm – 4pm Friday. Anyone is welcome to be with us. We also run activities throughout the day.

  • Come in and visit us! A member of the love Your Neighbour staff is usually in the building every day Monday – Thursday and if we can’t help you, we can hopefully find you someone who can.
